Technology Leadership Academy (TLA)

Technology Leadership Academy (TLA) is an articulated professional development program that provides teachers with a strong and consistent pedagogical base using the eMINTS instructional model (inquiry-based teaching powered by technology). The program provides Joplin educators with the opportunity to learn ways to integrate technology into the curriculum while expanding and refining their technology skills. Additionally, TLA members become technology leaders in the district and have opportunities to work with their colleagues to integrate technology into the curriculum.

The TLA program accepts approximately 125 teachers per year. Members are chosen for TLA each year through an application process. Those chosen receive a high-end laptop, a Smart Board system, and an LCD projector to better integrate technology into their respective areas.

TLA is the base tier in the district's iTEK initiative that all teachers are encouraged to partake in. In accordance with the district -wide iTEK initiative the following details should be noted by teachers considering this excellent program:

  • Teachers receive a Smart Board system and Teacher Laptop
  • 4 eMINTS Modules - 30+ hours Professional Development (1 Yr.) 25 summer hours, 2 full days
  • 12 hours cohort meetings
  • 45+ total contact hours

TLA Mentors

The TLA mentoring program is for those who have already completed the Technology Leadership experience. Mentors will be key individuals in helping new TLA members during the training process and in their respective buildings as needed as well as the lead facilitator of TLA Cohort Study Groups. Mentors will undergo 8 hours of Mentor Training. Mentors will receive classroom digital camera and digital video camcorder. In addition, they can either earn a stipend or Career Ladder during their training process and while facilitating TLA Cohort Groups.

The TLA Mentor program is a support pillar in the district-wide iTEK program. In accordance with the district-wide iTEK initiative the following details should be noted by teachers considering this excellent program:

  • Teachers receive a classroom digital camera and camcorder
  • A one hour Mentor Kick Off is required
  • 8 hours of Mentor training are required
  • Aid as assistants during one session of the summer TLA series for new members
  • Act as cohort leaders for new TLA members
