Substitute Certification Change
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) recently changed the certification requirements for substitutes.  
A Substitute certificate may be granted to an individual who is at least 21 years of age, has a high school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED) or High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) and has successfully completed a minimum of twenty (20) clock hours of DESE approved substitute teacher training that includes professionalism, honoring diversity, engaging students, foundational classroom management techniques, basic instructional strategies, supporting students with special needs, and working with at-risk youth.  Approved training is available here:

Directions for Applying to be a Substitute Teacher

  1. Visit to apply for a Substitute Certificate
  2. Once your Substitute Certificate has been issued through DESE, please submit your substitute application online.

*If selected after review of application, you will be contacted to interview.
* Please provide three professional references. -NO FAMILY OR FRIENDS.
Pay Scale 
  • The daily salary for a substitute teacher is $90.00.
  • Long term assignments: Long term pay is based on consecutive workdays. Days 1-10 are paid at $90.00 per day, days 11-end of the job are paid at $110.00 per day if there is not a break in service during that period. If there is a break in service, pay will drop back to $90.00 per day until the 10th consecutive day is met again.

* Payroll dates are the 20th of each month with the last day of the month being the cut-off date for calculating the amount each month.
*Payroll checks will be directly deposited.
