At 5:41 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2011, Joplin, Missouri was struck by a horrific EF-5 tornado that left a path of destruction through one-third of our city. Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed and 161 people lost their lives, including seven Joplin Schools' students and one staff member. Ten out of twenty school district buildings were damaged or destroyed resulting in financial damages of more than $100 million. More than 3000 students lived in the path of the storm and more than 4,200 students were without a school to attend.

Total losses:

• Joplin High School
• East Middle School

• Emerson Elementary School
• Old South Middle School (transitional facility vacant at time of storm)

Damaged or partial losses:

Joplin Schools began responding immediately. Our first priority was to account for all of our staff and students, then assess the damage. All students and staff were accounted for within one week of the tornado. We then turned our attention to finding temporary schools for our students.

Temporary school locations:

Joplin Schools made the commitment to start school on time. As promised, on August 17, 2011, 87 days after the tornado, all locations, including the following temporary locations, were ready to serve Joplin students.
