SHELLY TARTER NAMED VIRTUAL AND ALTERNATIVE LEARNING ADMINISTRATOR

Joplin Schools is pleased to announce Shelly Tarter as the new Virtual and Alternative Learning Administrator.  Tarter has been with the Joplin School District since 2000 and has served in the capacity of a classroom teacher, instructional coach, educational technology specialist, and a district-wide technology trainer.

Tarter is passionate about helping Joplin students achieve their goals. Tarter commented, “I am so excited to start this next chapter in my professional career helping students at Joplin Schools broaden their experiences to learn in order to achieve their diploma.”

Tarter began her career as an elementary third and fourth-grade teacher.  During that time, she became an eMINTS certified teacher and an eMINTS PD4ETS trainer for Joplin Schools.  She has been an integral part of the team in leading technology integration at all grade levels and provides professional development throughout the district.

Tarter was the Educational Technology Specialist at Joplin High School and also served as an Instructional Coach for the past eight years.   She has worked with classroom teachers on developing curriculum and courses that integrate technology. She provided professional development to staff and was instrumental in Joplin High School being named as the Apple Distinguished School in 2013 and 2015.

She also managed the learning management system, Canvas, and recently helped develop the new Joplin online virtual school. With the addition of Tarter’s new role, Joplin students will benefit not only from virtual learning opportunities but alternative programs such as JAG (Jobs for American Graduates). JAG is dedicated to helping students that experience significant barriers in their lives to graduate from high school and make positive transitions to postsecondary education and/or a meaningful career.

"We are excited about the opportunity to offer the JAG and virtual programs. Ms.Tarter brings a wealth of knowledge and great enthusiasm. I know this will be a great opportunity for our students.” stated Dr. Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services.

Tarter holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from Pittsburg State University, a Masters in Secondary Administration from Missouri Southern State University, and a Specialist in Educational Technology from the University of Columbia.  Shelly is excited to apply her educational and technology experience as the administrator of the Joplin Schools’ virtual and alternative learning opportunities.
