Free Health Screenings

Score 1 for Health is a highly successful program that has provided health screenings for elementary school children for more than twenty years in Kansas City. Beginning in 2018, Kansas City University (KCU) launched the Score 1 program in Joplin.  Under the direct supervision of KCU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s faculty and medical students in partnership with community nursing, dental and allied health students, Score 1 provides its services to students in all eleven Joplin elementary schools. Screenings include vision, dental, height & weight with body mass index (BMI calculation), blood pressure and a head-to-toe physical assessment.

Between the two KCU campuses, more tåhan 13,000 children benefit from the ongoing commitment that the medical students exhibit as they live out the KCU mission of improving the well-being of the communities they serve.

After children participate in the health screening, Score 1 notifies parents/guardians and school nurses of screening results.  In accordance with Missouri’s school health recommendations, Score 1 nurses and staff return to each school to follow up on screenings requiring a second check.  Score 1 helps families connect to health care providers and community resources.
