Definitions

District Technology Resources

Any account, password, software, access to software, technology device, internet or network connection, email or electronic communication tool provided by Joplin Schools

Education Purposes

Activities related to the process of teaching and learning in classroom settings and beyond.

Technology Device

Any piece of physical computing equipment and the associated equipment required for its use. (i.e. A laptop and it’s charger)

Purpose and Scope

This document works in conjunction with the Joplin Schools Device Terms of Service and Board Policy EHB to define the acceptable use of technology resources provided to a student enrolled and in good standing with the Joplin School district.

This policy covers any use of technology resources or access to technology resources provided to students enrolled in Joplin Schools, including, but not limited to: user, email and messaging accounts; software; access to online software; a network connection with internet access; technology devices.

This policy applies to the use of any district technology resource both on and off school grounds and both during and outside of school hours.

Accounts and Passwords

When using any account or password provided by Joplin Schools the student will:

  • Manage their passwords and accounts consistent with district requirements
  • Keep their password and other account information confidential
  • Notify district officials if they discover unauthorized access to any Joplin Schools account
  • Understand that all issued accounts are property of Joplin Schools
  • Understand that accounts, their activity, contents and communications may be monitored by Joplin Schools at all time
  • Understand that when a student leaves the district all accounts associated with the student will be suspended and access will be revoked.
  • Use accounts for educational purposes only.

Network and Internet Access

When accessing district network resources or internet access provided by Joplin Schools, including access provided from home, students will:

  •  Only connect District devices unless directed otherwise from Technology Services
  • Not attempt to disable or circumvent software or hardware designed to restrict access to non-educational content
  • Not attempt to gain unauthorized access to any systems, software, or hardware
  • Not engage in inappropriate online behavior
  • Understand that district network and internet resources are provided on “as is as available” basis
  •  Use access for educational purposes

Technology Devices

When using a district technology device students will:

  • Follow all rules and requirements as stated in the Device Terms of Use
  • Use the device for educational purposes

Privacy

While using any district technology resources students will:

  • Understand that Joplin Schools accounts, software, devices and networks are the sole property of Joplin Schools and all resources may be monitored at all times
  • Understand the Joplin School district reserves the right to monitor student use of technology resources to ensure both safety and appropriate use consistent with this policy and other district policies, mandates and procedures
  •  Understand that Joplin Schools follows all required state and federal mandates to ensure user privacy is protected at all times

Data Governance

Joplin Schools utilizes software and web-based applications in partnership with third parties. By signing this document Students and Guardians will:

  • Understand that many of these services require student personal information (student name, email, etc.)
  • Understand that the District places the security of personal information of all stakeholders as a top priority and fully vets all software and application vendors for mandated compliance before use.
  • Understand that Joplin Schools follows all federal mandates on student data privacy
  • Understand that the District's use of student personal information is for educational purposes only.
  • Understand that agreement to this policy allows the District to act as an agent in the creation and maintenance of accounts that may collect personal information for use within the educational process

Liability from Misuse

Joplin Schools assumes no responsibility for

  • Any unauthorized charges or fees incurred in the use of district provided resources
  • Any financial obligations arising out of unauthorized use of systems for the purchase of products or services
  • Any cost liability or damages caused by a user’s violation of this AUP or other district documents, policies or mandates
  • Any other inappropriate use of Joplin Schools technology resources

Consequences for Violations

  • Violations of this policy or other district policies, mandates or procedures may result in suspension or termination of access to district technology resources
  • Violations of this policy or other district policies, mandates or procedures may result in disciplinary action consistent with Joplin Schools code of conduct
  • Joplin Schools reserves the right to seek restitution for costs incurred by the District, including but not limited to legal fees, damage incurred and replacement costs, due to a student’s inappropriate, negligent or intentional misuse of district technology resources as stated in this policy and other district policies, mandates or procedures.
